Same Language Subtitling (SLS) project

The Same Language Subtitling (SLS) project at IIM-Ahmedabad has researched and implemented SLS pilots on TV in eight major Indian languages. The project has completed a 23 years journey. And yet, the most critical policy step remains unaccomplished — quality implementation of the policy on TV channels.  https://www.insightsonindia.com/2020/07/02/same-language-subtitling-sls-project/

PlanetRead.org and Boombox

Dr. Brij Kothari of Cornell University coined the term "Same-Language-Subtitling" in 1996 to describe his application of Karaoke-styled captioning.  Kothari developed SLS using Bollywood film songs on TV to promote literacy. His massive SLS study has received literacy awards from the Tech Museum of Innovation (San Jose), Development Marketplace (World Bank) and the Institute for Social Inventions (London) and recently U.S Library of Congress. His project has major financial support from the Google Foundation and the OLPC group incorporates his application into their educational package. PlanetRead and BookBox are Non-Profits associated with Dr. Brij Kothari's research.

Zane Education

Picture
As an all-around classroom media resource, Zane Education is remarkable. They have a comprehensive library of purposely subtitled educational video, accompanied by a variety of online study tools, lesson plans, additional study resources and online testing – using an on-demand subscription system.

Their online service provides a highly effective visual learning solution for the school and classroom, homeschooling and home educators and a wide variety of special needs. However, it is their video subtitles (otherwise know as closed captions) that makes their service completely unique. It is those subtitles that make their service increasingly popular for all children and students needing to improve their Reading and Literacy skills, and those students studying English as a Second Language.

As a result, Zane Education is becoming well known as the only online learning service that enables students aged within the K-12 grade range, to study over 260 curriculum topics while improving their reading, literacy and English Language skills AT THE SAME TIME.
